Countertop + Tile FAQ

Choosing the right countertop for your kitchen or bath is a big decision; form and function are both important to consider, not to mention price. Our design expert Trish will guide you in making the best choice for your home.

Here’s some helpful information about each option so that you can make an informed decision. And be sure to visit our Chelan Design Center to see, touch, and feel countertop samples.

Granite
Granite is a very hard stone and 100 percent natural. It’s mined from quarries all around the world, cut down to a manageable size, and then polished to a fine finish. There are a variety of finishes that you can have with granite, such as polished or honed. It is a popular countertop choice because of its natural beauty and durability. Something to keep in mind with granite is how other natural products interact with it. Highly acidic food, for instance can cause granite to lose its shine over time, and in extreme cases etch the stone.

Quartz
Quartz is a natural stone mixed with resins. It’s very durable and its surface resists heat, stains, and scratches. It is easier to keep clean than other natural stones, like granite. In the bath or kitchen, it creates a distinctive, elegant feel.

Solid Surface (Corian)
Solid surface countertops are manufactured to look like natural stone and are typically more affordable than granite or quartz. Unable to withstand the high heat of pots or curling irons, solid surface requires owners to take care in protecting it. The joints seem invisible, and sanding can remove damage to the surface.
